History
In 2000, SmokeFree Wisconsin was founded. The organization was dedicated to reducing tobacco consumption, especially among youth, through policy change. In pursuing that goal, SFW accomplished 38 local smoke-free ordinances, a statewide smoke-free law, two tax increases on tobacco products and much more. SFW has proved to be a credible advocacy resource, opposing the tobacco industry's well-funded efforts, earning the recognition and respect of both policy-makers and the media. Thanks to the hard work of SFW and their partners, 50,000 fewer teens are smoking today than were lighting up just ten years ago.
In 2011, SmokeFree Wisconsin became Health First Wisconsin. The expansion is part of a long-time goal for the organization which now works to promote nutrition and physical activity, curb tobacco use and prevent alcohol abuse in Wisconsin. The organization continues to work on tobacco prevention and control efforts under the SmokeFree Wisconsin coalition. The organization will carry their unique set of skills learned in tobacco prevention and control into other critical public health arenas, working together with local and state partners and coalitions to make Wisconsin a healthier place to live, work and play!
